English Name to Chinese Name Converter (120 Standard Names)

English to Chinese name converter using standard news-agency transliterations (Michael→迈克尔). Includes how transliteration works and why a real Chinese name is different.

Type an English first name and get its standard Chinese transliteration with pinyin — the same conventions Chinese news agencies use. 120 most common names covered.

How English Names Are Converted Into Chinese

Chinese has no alphabet, so an English name cannot be spelled out. It has to be rebuilt sound by sound: each syllable is matched to a Chinese character with a similar pronunciation. Michael has three syllables, so it becomes three characters, 迈克尔 (Màikè’ěr). The characters carry the sound, not the meaning.

This is not done freely. In mainland China, transliterations follow conventions maintained by Xinhua News Agency, whose reference dictionary Names of the World’s Peoples (世界人名翻译大辞典) is the de facto standard used by news media and official publications (source: Wikipedia: Transcription into Chinese characters). That is why every Chinese newspaper writes a given foreign name the same way: the character choices were settled long ago.

迈克尔
Michael — one character per syllable, sound only

特朗普 / 川普
Trump — mainland media and Taiwanese media transliterate the same name differently

陆克文
Kevin Rudd — a real Chinese name built from an English one, not a transliteration

Transliteration vs. a Real Chinese Name

Here is the honest part most converter tools skip: a transliterated name immediately marks you as foreign. 迈克尔 does not look like a Chinese person’s name. It has no surname, it runs three or four characters of pure phonetics, and any Chinese reader recognizes it instantly as “a foreigner called Michael.” For reading the news, that is exactly the point. For living, working, or building relationships in China, it is not what locals themselves would use.

A real Chinese name works differently: family name first, drawn from a limited set of established surnames, followed by a one- or two-character given name chosen for meaning and tone (source: Wikipedia: Chinese name). Former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is the classic example: his Chinese name 陆克文 (Lù Kèwén) takes 陆 as a genuine surname echoing “Rudd,” then 克文 echoing “Kevin” while reading as a plausible given name. It sounds like his English name and passes as a native name.

Be realistic about what a tool can do. A converter gives you the standard transliteration, which is correct for documents, news-style usage, and knowing how Chinese speakers will write your name. It cannot give you a good native Chinese name. That requires a native speaker who can weigh surname conventions, character connotations, tone flow, and unlucky homophones. If you need a real Chinese name, treat the converter output as a starting point and ask a native speaker to refine it.

Common English Names in Chinese

EnglishChinesePinyinWorth knowing
Michael迈克尔Màikè’ěrOften shortened to 迈克 in casual use
John约翰YuēhànBased on the older form Johannes, not the English sound
David大卫DàwèiTwo syllables, two characters
Sarah莎拉Shālā莎 is a character typically reserved for female names
William威廉Wēilián威 means “power,” a rare case where the sound match also flatters
Elizabeth伊丽莎白YīlìshābáiFour characters; long names stay long

Why Character Choice Matters

Mandarin is packed with homophones, so any syllable can be written with many different characters, each dragging its own meaning along. The standard transliteration set deliberately leans on semantically bland characters (克, 尔, 斯, 特) so a name does not accidentally say something. Gender is signaled too: female names conventionally get characters with the woman radical 女, such as 莎, 娜, and 玛, which is why Mary becomes 玛丽 rather than a masculine-looking alternative.

Same sounds, different signals. Swap one character and the impression changes: 丽 (“beautiful”) suits a woman’s name, while an off-list homophone might evoke something odd or comic. This is exactly the judgment call where standards, and native speakers, earn their keep.
